How’s My Driving? - Safe Driving Blog Tips

Road Safety Week 2025 is here, and this year’s theme, Safe Vehicles Save Lives, couldn’t be more important. At How’s My Driving?, we’ve spent the past 30 years turning public feedback into safer journeys, safer drivers, and stronger communities across the UK.
As we celebrate three decades of learning, listening, and improving road safety, we also want to spotlight some incredible fleets and drivers who’ve made safety part of their culture, and share practical tools to help you improve your fleet’s safety, too.
Why Safe Vehicles Start with Safe Drivers
Many organisations rely solely on dashcams or telematics to monitor driving, but there’s more to road safety than data. HMD provides a human perspective that cameras can’t capture, including moods, reactions, and behaviours like frustration or anger. This insight allows managers to coach drivers more effectively, prevent incidents before they happen, and build a culture of safety, responsibility, and pride.
As Willie Milne, Team Leader at the National Library of Scotland, explains: “While dashcams capture incidents and telematics track data, HMD highlights moods and reactions, giving us insights to coach and support drivers effectively. It helps us understand behaviour, not just data, and that makes all the difference.”
Celebrating Members Who Lead the Way
Frank Roberts & Sons Ltd: 25 Years of Excellence
For 25 years, Frank Roberts & Sons Ltd have turned driver feedback into progress. Over the past three years, they’ve seen:
? 63% fewer constructive reports
? Double the positive feedback
“It’s not just about feedback. It’s about recognising achievements, improving communication, and building pride behind the wheel. Driving responsibly is part of our culture.” Lee Sutton, Fleet & Compliance Manager
Moss Electrical Co. Ltd: 25 Years Strong
Moss Electrical Co. Ltd has relied on HMD for 25 years to keep drivers accountable and safe. Over a third of driver reports last year were positive, demonstrating that appreciation and accountability can go hand in hand.
“Telematics alone can’t tell us everything. We rely on the public to share what they see, and I always thank them.” Lee, Warehouse Manager.
National Library of Scotland: 25 Years of Thoughtful Driving
At the National Library of Scotland, drivers like Willie Milne and Ciaran Arthurs have been quietly leading by example for 25 years. Willie reflects:
“When the HMD sticker first appeared on our vehicles, I never saw it as Big Brother, it made me think differently about how I drive. HMD gives a human perspective that cameras and telematics can’t.”
To mark this milestone, Ross, founder of HMD, presented all three organisations with Awards for Dedication to Driver Safety, celebrating their commitment to safer roads and professional driving.
Your Fleet’s Road Safety Starts Here
To help you take action this Road Safety Week, we’ve created a practical, downloadable Safer Vehicle Checklist for daily vehicle safety checks. Using it ensures your vehicles are road-ready, helps identify potential issues early, and promotes a culture of safety in your fleet.
The checklist covers critical areas every driver should inspect before a journey, including:
- Brakes, tyres, and steering.
- Coolant, oil, and fuel levels.
- Mirrors, windscreen wipers, lights, and indicators.
- Dashboard warning lights and visible damage.
- Seat belts, cab interior, and load security.
- Battery condition, engine exhaust, spray suppression, and electrical connections.
- Number plates, reflectors, markings, and warning plates.
Remember: Always record and report any defects you find. If you discover a defect during your journey, find a safe place to stop and assess it. If a defect impacts the vehicle’s safety, it must be repaired before the vehicle can be used again.

Using this checklist alongside HMD feedback ensures safer drivers, safer vehicles, and safer roads, a complete approach to fleet safety.
